Consider, for a moment, the types of messages that are frequently heard (and internalised) in childhood:

• Children should be seen and not heard.

• It’s rude to ask.

• If you’re not going to say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

• You’ll never be as good as your sister at…

This list goes on and on. For both the coach and the client, what messages did they hear and internalise when they were growing up? Such messages are often internalised to become part of the person’s belief systems and then guide behaviours. This is explored further in tier 3.
